Team Spotlight
Every month we will be shining a light on a member of our team, asking each of them the same five questions, to find out how they are getting on at IDR, their goals for the future and to generally get to know them that little bit better!
December spotlight – Paris Flood, Senior Paralegal, Team Bristol.
1. What led you to choose law as a career?
Alongside a part time job I had, I chose to study business at college. Over time the studying started to feel a bit relentless, and I felt I needed something else. When the opportunity of an apprenticeship in business administration arose at JCP solicitors in Wales, (where I am originally from) I jumped at it!
Initially at JCP my main role was a secretary on the reception, but I constantly had my eyes open to the workings of the firm and if there was more I could get involved in. In time I began to shadow some of the solicitors and was put on relevant courses to further my legal knowledge. I started to have a go at drafting legal documents for clients such as Wills and giving them advice, I was then promoted to a Legal Assistant and subsequently Legal Advisor.
Due to personal reasons, I made the move to Somerset, and went back into a Legal Secretary role at Porter Dodson, where I started my CILEX studies. As part of the studies, I had to gain experience in another department. The contentious element of Private Client was best suited. After a few months, I was offered the position of Senior Legal Assistant in Cara Hough’s contentious probate team, which led me to my next stop as Senior Paralegal at IDR Law.
2. What attracted you to IDR?
Lots of things!
It goes without saying that they have a really modern way of working and thinking, as well as giving their staff that work/life balance with the flexibility factor – which is so important at the moment.
Above all though it was the fact that they are so unique and by this I mean that they solely deal with contentious probate. This is what attracted me most. This is what I find so interesting.
The contentious probate teams I have worked with in the past have been small and part of firms where other types of law are going on, which can become diluted.
However, at IDR it is focused, which means a consistent flow of knowledge running through the firm which can only be positive for the clients and its staff.
3. Describe what it’s like to work at IDR in three words.
Client-focused, innovative and friendly.
4. What does the future look like for you at IDR?
A place where I will continue to want to work. I also see myself progressing through my CILEX studies and the amazing IDR University that is being set up here for people like me that want to progress and achieve their goal of becoming an expert in contentious probate.
Plus, if becoming an expert in contentious probate is a key goal like it is of mine, there is really nowhere else you would want to be, would there?
5. Just for fun tell us something interesting about you that your co-workers wouldn’t know!?
People may think this is odd, but Halloween is my favourite holiday and I actually prefer it over Christmas!!! Fact.
